I have been playing Settlers of Catan (© Mayfair Games) for years. It is a wonderful game that offers just the right amount of competition and cooperation. My friends and I enjoy the game. But every time we play it someone will bang the game tiles or drag a sleeve into the board and all the tiles move. For years I've wanted to design a board to hold the games tiles; now I finally have. My game board holder and accessories make the game even more fun to play.

I had three main problems I wanted to solve.
1. The Board Hexes get bumped during a game and move.
2. The cards get messy during the game.
3. The game bits move on the board.

I designed a board to hold hex tiles that measure 3 1/8 inches across the flats, the image below is my Hex Board Style 1. The board breaks down into four pieces (6 pieces with the 5-6 player expansion) for easy transportation and storage. The hexes sit down in the board between the "Y" shaped pieces. This leaves a small space between the hexes for game bits to sit down into. Other games bits can go on top of the "Y" shaped pieces.

Hex Board Style 1 with Tiles, Campatible with Settlers of Catan 3-4 Player

This board is designed to hold a set of playing hexes 4 on a side. This is the same layout as used in the first to third edition (1E to 3E) of Settlers. In the fourth edition (4E), the outer ring of hexes were replaced with a frame. I have a set of adapter hexes to hold the port pieces. You might ask why not just build the board to hold the 4E board. First, I own an older version, but more important, my design will work with the Seafarers (© Mayfair Games) expansion and all the different editions. Here are some pictures of my board being used with Settlers and Seafarers. NOTE: The layouts are compatible with all the scenarios and will hold all the water and land tiles; however, some of the ports might be on the frame of the board with my basic bundles. Board Layout Options

Hex Board Layout Options.

My board design is very versatile. I often get asked "what board pieces do I need?" The answer is complex. What hex configuration do you want? What game(s) and what version do you want to use it with? What problems are you trying to solve?

The design is very module and there are lott of options and combination in the way the board pieces can be configured. What hex layout do you want and need? Do you want the ports down in the board (Hex Port Adapters) or are you fine with the ports up on the frame? This page should help you understand how all the different board pieces work together to make different layouts. Hex Board Layout Options.

Hexes

The images below show the Bit Adapters hexes. The hexes come in sets of 24 hexes, 12 with holes and 12 blank or in mix and match sets of 12.

Need a special double or triple hex for the board, we have those too. We can make other special ones, quad hexes or three in a triangle. If you want it and do not see it ask.

Card Trays Kits

Card Tray Kit, Single and Five Space We have single space, three and five space card tray that are compatible with Settlers of Catan (© Mayfair Games).

The Card Trays are shipped as a kit. They come on a sheet, ready to remove, assemble, and use; similar to a plastic model. You will need a hobby knife, sand paper (optional) and glue to assemble the trays. The tray kits are shipped unassembled in raw wood ready to be stained.

Optional Oil Finish

I have been testing different finishes for the board. I did some tests with painting the frame different shades of blue and the body different colors from white to ivory to beige. The paint looked great with the land hexes, but the playing pieces disappeared with the paint. I found that an oil finish looks the best. I am currently using Watco Danish Oil.

The top image is Birch Ply taken with a flash, the lower image is with natural lighting (in the sun). The road pieces are across the joints between different pieces of wood. Each piece of wood has a different color oil on it. From left to right the oil colors are:

Plain Teak Oil, no color
Golden Oak
Cherry
Fruitwood
Medium Walnut

I have decided the board looks best when it is oiled and not painted. Some colors of playing pieces show up better with some of the stains, some not as well; orange in Fruitwood, red in cheery and brown in medium walnut. I feel the best color oil is Golden Oak or Plain Oil. I use Watco Danish Oil.

I also did some tests with the Oak wood I am using for the Limited Edition Numbered Collectors Accessory Hex Board Style 1 sets. Check out the color test with the Oak.

Optional Engraving

Engrave your name, company or saying on the outer frame of the board, subject to content review by Prawn Designs. It will be visible during play. The same thing will be engraved on all 4 pieces of the Hex Board Style 1. The space for the engraving is approximately 1/2" by 12". This will fit approximately 43 characters.

Hex Accessory Board Details

The boards and trays are made out of Baltic (Russian) Birch plywood. Baltic Birch is knot-free, but has "plugs". The boards are shipped assembled ready to play, in raw wood ready to be oiled or painted.

These boards are compatible with the Settler of Catan board game (© Mayfair Games). It will work with the older third edition (3E) or earlier versions of the game. The board will work with the newer fourth edition (4E) version of the game. The major difference between the 3E and 4E versions is the port and water hexes. In the newer game, the port and water hexes were replaced with a frame.

We have hexes to hold chits in our accessory board, see (PD-1009 to PD-1011).

The boards are sturdy and heavy. The Hex Board Style 1 with the Expansion Accessory Board A together weigh more than 4 pounds. Standard shipping is via United States Postal Service (USPS) Large Flat Rate package. United Parcel Service (UPS) and USPS Parcel Post are available on request.

Dice Box Kit

Hex dice box kit. The finished box is approximately 3 3/8" across the flats. Assembly required, recommended tools to assemble the dice box; hobby knife, sand paper and glue. Below are some detail shots of the corners. The laser cuts "square" corners. Since the box is a hex the corners are not square. There are some "gaps" in the corners. It makes a nice rolling box for two dice.
