Have you ever tried to inset your UP5 Throttle Face Place into your fascia?
Getting the inset cut just right can be difficult. Prawn Designs makes a
router Template and Stencil set to help.
The UP5 Template Set is made up of two parts, the Template and a pair
of stencils.
(NOTE: These two stencils have been combined into one.)
The UP5 Template and Stencil set is designed to help guide your router
to make a perfectly sized hole to inset a UP5 Face Plate. Note, if you are
using a stock UP5 Face Plate you will need to square the corners with a
wood chisel.
Router Bit
You
will need a Pattern Bit for your router. The Template is designed for a
1/2 inch diameter Flush Cut Pattern Bit. The bit also needs to be short
so that the bearing at the top of the bit will follow the pattern in the
template. I use a part number 102-0862B from
Eagle America. This bit is only 1/8 inch tall, so it can only cut 1/8
inch deep.
If you want to make a deeper cut check out part number 102-0872B,
it is 3/8" tall.
How To Use The Template
Select the "Open/Close Instructions" button to display basic instructions
on how to use the Throttle Jack Router Template.
UP5 Template and Stencil Guide Instructions
Be sure you read the instructions manual that came with your tools
and adhere to all the safety procedures. Always wear the correct safety
equipment for the tools you are using, including but not limited to
eye and hearing protection. The following is offered as a guide and
not a complete set of instructions.
All the images are links. Select any image to have a larger copy
of the image open in a new Tab or Window.
Note: in this example I am using a piece of scrap wood.
Position and clamp the Template onto the fascia.
Be aware of what is going to be behind the throttle jack. Is there
enough space for the throttle jack to extend out the back of the fascia?
You
will need a Pattern Bit for your router. The Template is designed for
a 1/2 inch diameter Flush Cut Pattern Bit. The bit also needs to be
short so that the bearing at the top of the bit will follow the pattern

Adjust
the bit so that it will only cut as deep as your Face Plate is thick.
If using the Prawn Designs UP5 Custom Face Plate from 1/16" Baltic Birch,
adjust the router to cut 1/16" deep.
Using the template as a guide. Run the bearing around the edges and
then remove all the middle area.
If you are using a Prawn Designs Custom Replacement Face Plate, it should
drop in.
If you are using the Face Plate that comes with the Throttle Jack
you will have to square the corners. I recommend a wood chisel for this.
Now to make the area to be cut out for the throttle jack. Place the
stencil that is a ring into the hole. Use a pencil to draw a line around
the inside of the ring.
(NOTE: These two stencils have been combined into one.)
Remove the ring stencil and insert the other stencil. Use an Awl, Pencil,
Center Punch or other similar tool to mark the four small holes.
Drill 4 holes at the indicated spots.
Use a jig saw, coping saw or similar tool to cut between the 4 holes
along the lines.
You can now assemble your Throttle Jack and install it and run trains
